About the ARTISTS

The first edition of CLOUD was created by Calgary-based artists Caitlind r.c. Brown & Wayne Garrett for Nuit Blanche Calgary on September 15, 2012. Initiated by Brown, over the course of creating the sculpture, the project evolved into a collaboration between Brown & Garrett, a local musician, machinist, and artist working as Brown’s technical mentor on the project. Brown & Garrett had previously worked together on numerous installations and films, most notably The House Project, a group installation re-imagining a home scheduled for demolition and transforming the space into a series of interactive art rooms.

Caitlind r.c. Brown is an artist, filmmaker, and collaborator based in Calgary, Canada. A graduate from Alberta College of Art + Design (2010), Brown works part-time in the cultural sector, hosts a weekly Arts & Culture radio program on CJSW 90.9 fm, and collaborates frequently on films and installations with artist/musician Wayne Garrett.

Wayne Garrett is an artist and musician living in Calgary, Canada. A graduate from the Jazz Performance program at Mount Royal University (2012), Garrett has a background in machining (Red Seal 2009). Garrett brings mechanical and musical expertise to his work and collaborations with Caitlind r.c. Brown and other artists. Wayne also plays lead guitar for old-time country band, The Bitterweed Draw.

The duo works with diverse mediums and materials, ranging from 16mm celluloid to re-appropriated architectural waste, exploring themes of public interaction, art in unexpected spaces, re-use of domestic waste, community collaboration, and play. Brown and Garrett frequently collaborate with the “Arbour Lake Sghool” collective (a group of artists subverting the suburbs of Calgary and beyond), and actively contribute to Calgary’s film, art, and music communities.

A second edition of CLOUD was commissioned by Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow, Russia. CLOUD (the second) is the featured piece in their annual group show, Art Experiment 2013, running from January 2 – 23, 2013.
